Update 12.2.22

Poe continues to be a happy and very energetic bundle of puppy enthusiasm! She will be needing an active family who is looking forward to bringing her out on adventures and who also have the training experience to keep her safe (mostly from her own enthusiastic, goofy impulses).

Poe ***loves*** to explore the world! She follows her nose at lightening speed, eager to see and smell it all.

(And taste much of it, too! Thankfully, the 'drop' request is coming along very nicely!)

She will eagerly dart after blowing leaves and sticks and, occasionally, try and race alongside cars.

Work has already begun on teaching Poe to wait patiently at open doors, but this will need to be continued to prevent her from darting outside when she sees something interesting.

It is not uncommon for Poe to randomly begin happily running in circles around you at top speed at the the end of a 6 or 8 foot leash (like a horse on a lunge line).

While she is responding very well to changes in direction while walking with the use of a 'let's go!' prompt, encouraging her to learn to keep the leash loose in a 'controlled walk' setting is going to require an owner who is already knowledgeable, willing and excited to spend time working with her.

Poe is not a couch potato pup. She will be needing someone excited about taking her for longer hikes and including her in their exercise routine or outdoor activities on a daily basis.
(Something more then simply playing out in the yard.)

Thankfully, she already loves most people, other dog-friendly dogs and enjoys going on car rides, so bringing her along with you on your daily adventures would be just perfect!

Update 11.30.22

We have adjusted Poe's breed listing on this site as it becomes increasingly clear as she grows that she is much more beagle/rottie then lab. She seems likely to more be on the smaller side as well when she is full grown- maybe 40 pounds?

And right now, Poe is all about the smells and following her nose in new places- very similar to the traits found in beagles!

But she is also very happy to see almost everyone that she meets and is very interested in other dogs that she sees as well. She would love to play with them all (if they are known to be friendly), but can be content quietly watching them walk by, too.

Ppe recently met several new dogs (neither who wanted to play with her, unfortunately) and greeted them with puppy play bows and face licks before bugging the heck out of them trying to get them to play.

She also attended a large social park gathering (of people) and was very happy to meet lots of new friendly strangers and kids.

She will need lots of monitoring around kids, however, as she is getting into one of her more 'chewy phases'. And she is also prone to getting even more chewy as she nears nap time. (But a cozy rest in a quiet spot usually takes care of that.)

Poe is working really hard on greeting people nicely (4 on the floor)- but it's so hard when there are just so many happy faces that need licking!)

And she loves, loves LOVES sand! We don't know about water yet (it's not quite the right season for swimming)
but she would definitely enjoy a beach romp with her family any time!

Update 11.21.22

Please Note: Given Poe's parentage (mom: lab mix and dad: either a beagle or a rottie) we do not know what size she will end up. She does not have huge feet at the moment, so this could mean that she will end up looking like a beagle- sized Rottweiler. ( Which is kind of a cool concept, we think. :) ) Or she may get bigger then that. Please look to the photos to get a sense of whether she may be the right size for your family

Poe continues to have great looking poops (solid) and only has a few more days left on her medication.   She is a happy, wiggly little girl who loves meeting new people and friendly dogs of all sizes!

Bigger dogs may send her running away, initially, but if they are calm then Poe bounces right on back to come and say 'hi'! She just wants to play, play, play with them a ***lot*** so any older dogs in her new home should be of a calmer temperament, but also happy to take on lots of exuberant puppy energy.

Update 11.13.22:

Poe was recently diagnosed by our vet as having coccidia and is currently being treated with Albon but her poos are looking great and we suspect that she will only need the single 10 day course to get her over it. But she will still require another fecal test at her next vaccine appointment to confirm that it has been taken care of.

She continues to be a very sweet, gentle, playful and adventurous little girl. And she loves going on car rides! A visit to a busy Lowes location on a Saturday afternoon didn't even phase her! She rode in the shopping cart- feet flopping over the edge to get a better look at the world- trotted right through the automatic doors several times, greeted many, many people and kids with calm kisses and a wiggling bottom and tried to eat the boxes of only a few of the dehumidifiers. (Probably our fault, since lately we've been encouraging her to find her kibble inside of cardboard boxes and other fun places.)

She continues to love solving puzzles and the introduction recently of wobbly surfaces to play on (like a blanket covered balance board) was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. We suspect that she would make a wonderful hiking or boating companion! Agility trials or therapy training would also likely be her speed since she is very calm around new situations, has never been known to bark or react negatively to people or dogs that she has encountered and loves to please the people she is with.

Recently a new small dog (a daschund mix) has come into her foster home who is not a fun of puppy energy and Poe really wants to play with him (offering play bows and appeasement signals). But she is also content to just watch him from her puppy pen since he is just not having any of that puppy energy nonsense.

But another pup who would be happy to romp with her would probably be a great match! Her play style is much more 'gentle wrestling, chase and tug' than 'body slamming knock-outs', though, so that is something to keep in mind.

We are continuing to work with Poe on her basic manners- including requests such as 'drop', 'leave it', recall (when distracted by things like bugs, rocks and leaves), walking nicely on a looser leash and potty training. But, she is a curious and busy pup with a shorter attention span, so expect her to still have some accidents and to try and eat rocks, sticks and the occasional dirty sock that she finds.

Original Description:

Poe is a very sweet and laid back little girl who is doing very well learning to go potty outside and loves to cuddle, play and meet new people!

This little girl's Mom is known to be a lab mix and Dad is either a Beagle or Rottie/Lab mix so if you are looking for a food motivated, slightly independent, sweet and gentle little pup who is very smart and also loves to play then she may be a perfect match for your family!

She was found living outside with no shelter before she was brought into the rescue.

When you hold her, this little girl will usually melt into your arms and lick your face. Then, when you finally put her down (if you can :) ) she’ll often gently climb right back into your lap for a cuddle! Although she loves hanging out with you inside, you may come in 2nd place to all the smells she finds in the big wide world- at least initially.

Poe is comfortable hanging out in a puppy playpen with an attached crate for naps and ‘down time’. But she really adores attention and would much prefer being right by your side (or in your lap). She may need some gentle help to be able to settle happily in a space by herself and will likely not do well if left alone- at least initially.

Poe enjoys meeting most new people and makes ‘people friends’ very easily as long as they are gentle, speak softly and don’t overwhelm her with frantic activity, loud voices or rough play. Shortly, she will also be introduced to several friendly neighborhood dogs of different sizes and ages.

For now, Poe is being encouraged to simply ignore and/or to calmly watch other dogs (animals and people) who may be close or walking by. She enjoys hanging out with the human kids and people (men and women) in her foster home and will usually trot right over for some petting and love. (Unless she’s thinking about taking a nap and is already in a comfy spot- then you may have to encourage her with some tasty treats.) Often, she is happy to follow her favorite people around the house like… well, a puppy.

A fence is not required to adopt this sweety IF you have a very solid plan in mind to keep this girl active and busy. (A walk or two around the block every day will likely **not** be enough to keep her happy and healthy.)

An active family who loves to spend time with and train their dogs (and who may enjoy participating in agility, herding, scent work, camping, hiking or other dog-inclusive sports) will have a wonderful time with Poe!

(Watching her swim and tunnel 'underground' through large piles of autumn leaves, we have reason to believe that she may have been a ferret in a previous life. :) )

Have a dog already? Poe could do great with a dog buddy to live and play with- just as long as she also gets a whole lot of 'people time' in too.

Poe is an absolute joy to work with! She picks up new skills quickly and is very treat/food/attention motivated. She also loves running after squeaky toys and going on car rides to new and exciting places. (She may need some time to get used to the ride itself, but she generally has fun at the destination. )

She is currently working on her recall skills, walking with a looser leash, settling quietly when requested to, waiting for permission to go through doors and other basic manners.

Poe is doing great going potty outside- often completing her business very quickly with a prompt or two. She also is learning to sit nicely and wait for her food, keep 4 paws on the floor when she wants attention, coming when called over and leaving things alone that she would prefer to eat (like dirty socks, legos and rocks).  Since everything is still very new to her, all of this training will likely take quite a bit of repetition and reinforcement for her to become consistent with.

A family with calmer kids older than 8 will likely be the best fit for this little girl. (Remember- puppies can go through some pretty intense ‘Chewy periods’ that may be challenging to manage safely with smaller kids. )

Living situations that come with breed, size or noise restrictions will not work for Poe since we have no way of knowing how big she may end up being.

Apartments/townhouses may work, depending on the type, size and location but please keep in mind that Poe is a higher-energy pup who has an unknown adult size expectation. She also has a tendency to bark very loudly during play.

Poe is coming from a foster home where she has been consistently worked with from day one using hand feeding techniques, treat balls with kibble inside and toys and training games that are designed to encourage puppies to work on self control and to use their minds, scent and problem solving skills.

Consistent work is put in to encourage positive socialization and friendly adaptive skills. To the extent they are comfortable and able to handle it, the puppies are carefully exposed to the sights/sounds of a busy family household in a more urban environment. (This includes interacting with kids and people of all types, cats, small animals and backyard chickens. As appropriate, they are also carefully exposed to friendly neighborhood dogs and strangers, car rides, walking on different textures and surfaces and desensitized to many othim busy environmental stimuli.))

Please note that our adoption process includes a vet reference check on any current or previous pets you may have (had), a home visit (either performed virtually or in-person) and a 'meet and greet'. There may also be some clarification questions sent for you to answer as well. (These are based on the information you provide in your original application.)

All these steps are to help ensure that our pups are placed into families that will be a good match for their individual needs.

HDDCR requires a spay/neuter contract by the adopter if puppies and kittens in our care are too young for sterilization. This is a form the adopter signs at the time of adoption, confirming that they will get the pet spayed/neutered by a certain date. We will hold a $50 deposit on top of the adoption fee until we receive proof from a veterinarian that the dog was spayed/neutered. The $50 deposit will then be returned to the adopter.

Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue microchips all dogs and cats before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the shoulder blades and are another form of identification should the animal get lost. The microchips are registered to    Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue. The adopter's information is added once the adoption is complete. The adopter is responsible for a    $19.99/Year registration fee or a $45.00/Lifetime registration fee    to change information.   Dogs and Cats still need to have collar with tags should they get lost.
